DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Within the Demon Dentist the social construct of a traditional marriage is challenged. Gender roles and power dynamics are subverted, flipping “who wear’s the pants” in your typical 50’s couple. Through gruesome displays of love, society’s idea of attraction is demolished, showing us that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. With the play set in a dentist’s office Dr. Muller drills into the underlying issue of their marriage, representing liberation for Amelia in the restraints of her marriage.
FOLEY DESIGNER'S STATEMENT
Foley sound design is the reproduction of everyday sounds used in a production. Most of the sound effects heard by the audience other than the dialogue are created by Foley sound designers. As the Foley sound designer for my group, I made a lot of the sound effects within the performance using things around my house. When making sounds for the radio play, I would experiment with these different items I found, and using trial and error, try and create the most believable sounds possible for the performance. I experimented by walking in different shoes, such as stilettos, boots and wedges to find the right weight and sound of Nurse Trips’ walk. I created the sound of restraining someone by manipulating and pulling car seatbelts in different ways until I found a believable sound. I experimented with different fruit to create a ‘fleshier’ sound effect for a tooth being pulled out of a patient’s mouth.
EXAMPLES OF FOLEY DESIGN
-
I created Dr Muller and Nuse Trips’ entrances by recording my footsteps in differing shoes, on tiles.
-
I recorded myself flipping through a recipe book to create the sound of someone flipping through and reading a magazine.
-
To create the sound of a tooth being pulled out, I recorded myself ripping open an orange.
-
I dropped a small stone onto a ceramic plate to create the sound of a tooth being dropped on a tray.
-
I recorded myself moving seatbelts in different ways to create the sound of restraining a patient.
-
To create the sound of a person falling onto the floor, I recorded myself safely and carefully dropping onto the floor.
